Keep Scotland Beautiful

Beach Awards and Coastal Campaigns: Clean Coast Scotland

About Clean Coast Scotland

Clean Coast Scotland

Scotland boasts some beautiful beaches along its 6,200 miles of coast. These beaches are a resource, which we should all be proud of, and strive to protect, enhance and manage in a sustainable way.

Clean Coast Scotland was established in 2001 following significant investment in wastewater treatment facilities and resulting improved bathing water quality. It was recognised that in order to make the most of these coastal improvements a partnership should be set up to pull together the positive momentum from organisations - ranging from statutory bodies to non-government pressure groups.

A steering group was formed and a campaign co-ordinator appointed. The steering group provides an impartial forum which used to meet four times a year, and now meets less regularly or when an issue needs discussing. The aim is to work together to improve the quality and raise awareness of the Scottish coastline as a resource for the benefit of the general public and the environment through sustainable use and management.

Clean Coast Scotland

Over the years the Clean Coast Scotland partnership has been involved in an international project to raise awareness of marine litter - Save the North Sea; a campaign to inform people of the correct way to dispose of sanitary waste; carrying out beach user attitude surveys; and administering the current Bathing Water Litter Grant scheme. Clean Coast Scotland also chaired the Scottish Bathing Water Review Panel between 2005 and 2008, and sits on the panel which is now administered by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).
