West Sandwick Beach is a quaint white sand beach on the West Coast of Yell. This surprising little gem, only a stone throw from the car park, is hidden from view by its dunes and offers amazing views of rocky outcrops towards the North Mainland of Shetland.
The nearest town to West Sandwick Beach is West Sandwick on the west coast of Yell. From Lerwick take the A970 north and follow signposts to the north isles ferry terminal at Toft. From the ferry, follow the A968 through the Island of Yell, when you see signposts for West Sandwick turn left onto the single track road and follow until you reach a phone box, take another left here towards the shore then follow the signs to West Sandwick beach. There is a bus service from Lerwick to West Sandwick which runs several times a day, see local bus timetables or visit http://www.shetland.gov.uk/transport/ for details. The ferry serivce to the Island runs throughout the day, for further details see the local inter-island ferry timetable or visit the website above. The route to the beach is part of a core path plan for Shetland, information about which can be found at the local Visit Shetland office in Lerwick.

A real gem. Recommended to us by the Chief Engineer on the Yell ferry. We were told before going to Yell that many people just drive through it to get to Unst and Fetlar but this beach proves how wrong they are to do that.
